Problem

  • The plant used four aging compressors to supply a total 34.8 m3/min:
    • 1 x Atlas Copco GA355(55kW)
    • 2 x CompAir RA60(45kW)
    • 1 x CompAir Broomwade 6100(75kW)
  • The compressors were not energy efficient and were short cycling
  • The plant was not HACCP compliant and had poor air quality. This posed a risk to production and to food contamination.

Solution

  • Replaced the compressors with more suitable, efficient VSD compressors
  • Increased the air receiver capacity to stabilise the system
  • Installed adequately sized refrigerated dryers, filters and safety measures such as an Activated Carbon Tower to meet ANZ Food Standards Codes of Practice and provide the plant with HACCP quality compressed air.

Results

  • ESCs Value of $20,205
  • Annual electrical energy savings 449 MWh
  • Reduced electrical consumption by 51.9%
  • Project simple payback of 3.9 years
  • Reduced specific energy consumption from 11.2 to 7.1 kW/m3/min
  • Met HACCP methodology compressed air requirements
